Anxiety

fear
freeze my heart
as you melt my brain
you don't allow me to rest
but nor can I get work done
if I was daring
I would try
all

why
why not try
this is what you ask
anxiety the reason
for my procrastination
I fear I will fail
look the fool

I am aware that the image is visually disconcerting and unpleasant. It is an accurate depiction of the way anxiety feels.

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 28: Broken Pieces

I'm afraid I've got some bad news for you, Sunshine
You see, I'm feeling discouraged today
You see, my obsessive-compulsive, bipolar, attention-deficient brain
Is not complying with this idea of acceptance
You see, my quivering fuckery of a personality is feeling anything but precious
Some days she can fool herself that she's healing
That she's regaining her strength
Today is not that day
And tomorrow isn't looking so hot either
Do not come
To my run-down, battered, dilapidated, war-torn house in the bad part of town
Looking for a bright beacon of light
Or some fucking Hallmark Channel story about the horrible old hag
Who was cured of her mental illness
And suddenly became young and pretty
You will not find her here
On the wrong side of the Cosmos
Swilling her bitter bitches brew
Wondering if today is the day when she walks off down the road
Into the cold
And lets nature take its course
Like it should have long ago
I have some bad news for you, Sunshine
Today is not that day
And tomorrow is not looking so hot either
All bad things must come to an end
But today is not that day
Maybe tomorrow
Who the hell knows?
In the meantime, I sip my bitches brew
And try to kill off the remaining feelings
Wherever they may hide
Deep inside
The toxic moonlight bipolar negative blacklight supernova
That lies at the very heart of me

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 22: Broken Pieces

Image by Peter H from Pixabay

I was born broken
Broken under a bad sign
Sign that says "keep away"
Away from this heart of mine

I will never be whole
Whole life spent with a heavy heart
Heart that was broken before I was born
Born into a life that tore me apart

You'll never find me embracing light
Light and lies are all the same
Same pretenders to goodness everywhere
My strength lies in not playing their game

I run for my life, hide from the light
Light which exposes too much of my soul
Soul embracing the darkness inside
Inside a broken heart long gone cold

~Cie~

Notes:
Loop Poetry is a poetry form created by Hellon. There are no restrictions on the number of stanzas nor on the syllable count for each line. In each stanza, the last word of the first line becomes the first word of line two, last word of line 2 becomes the first word of line 3, last word of line 3 becomes the first word of line 4. This is followed for each stanza. The rhyme scheme is abcb.

Sorry, but your girl Cie ain't feeling the whole question and answer part of the prompt. Make of this poem what you will.

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 21: Screaming Inside Myself

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

I'm screaming into the wind
enough is enough
I've had it with having to let go

nobody ever wants to hold on
to the ugly one
to the one no-one pursues

to the one men go out with on a dare
memories of being the laughingstock
overwhelm me

I want to hide inside forever
I want to dance a little
but my body is broken

I don't laugh and sing in my dreams
I don't expect anything
except more rejection

don't reach out
stay inside
run and hide

nobody hears
and if they hear they don't listen
and if they listen

they don't understand
I'm forever screaming inside myself
because I know nobody hears

~Cie~

Notes:
Sorry, but I'm rubbish at making shape poems and I just got through writing a book review and I haven't even gotten to writing a chapter in my own story yet, so you get this tortured-scream free verse, in part inspired by the song I'm about to share, one to which I've been able to relate to all too well in my life.
Please, I implore you, this is one of those don't try to fix me pieces. Let me let it bleed. If there's one place a person ought to be able to express the dark, the bitter, the broken, that place is poetry.
Also, please don't say "I hope this isn't autobiographical."
It is, and saying that will not make it not autobiographical.
Let me let it bleed.
The aftermath of bullying is forever.

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 19: Purple

Image by Ron Rev Fenomeno from Pixabay

Purple feels like my deep dreams
When I'm wrapped in royal mystery
Purple feels like I've been redeemed

Purple feels like the wildest scenes
From my debauched history
Purple feels like my deep dreams

When inspiration bathes me in lavender beams
So bright that they should blister me
Purple feels like I've been redeemed

My purple prose soothes my soul's tortured screams
Though my detractors scorn my work bitterly
Purple feels like my deep dreams

Purple bruise in my heart which can't be seen
By those who sneer that my dreams are frippery
Purple feels like I've been redeemed

I fade into my purple dreams
And all the world fades for me
Purple feels like my deep dreams
Purple feels like I've been redeemed

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 18: Disappointment

Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay

Fair warning that the following is salty, blasphemous, and should not be read in polite company or impolite company either. Probably more a rant than a poem.

The first time I was disappointed
I was probably a baby
Whose annoying crying was ignored

But the first time I remember
Really feeling heartbroken
I was three years old

I found a dead butterfly
And was hurt to realize
That the God I was taught to worship

Left this creature broken
Knowledge such as this
Was supposed to strengthen my faith

Teach me to engage in prayer
To beg God for mercy
But as it happens

I don't care to worship
A God you're supposed to fear
I gave up years ago

Giving devotion to a deity
Who wants my piety
But knows no mercy

Whenever I feel broken
And am fool enough to express myself
Someone feels the need to tell me

That this too shall pass
These words don't bring me comfort
These words are kerosene

Those words stir up my ire
My ire is the fire
To ignite their lily ass

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 16: Harried to the Grave

it does not matter
matter one measure if
if you measure your time
time on an Apple watch
watch your time on an old
old beat-up analog tick-tick
tick-tick the sound
sound as time is running out
out of your wasting life
life where triumphs come
come slowly and don't seem
seem to stick around at all
all the while your life is wasting
wasting away fast as a wish
wish you would stop
stop giving away
away all your me time
time to see time as
as a commodity time
time does not come free
free time does not align
align with being a successful
successful mess who never
never ever stops
stops to wind her old watch
watch time slip away
away until one day
day when there are
are no more days
days are numbered from the first
first moment you take a breath
breath that leads to death
death comes for us all
all of us must fall
fall back into the time
time when time didn't matter
matter meant nothing
nothing meant anything
anything was possible
possible dreams
dreams become schemes
schemes become obsession
obsession consumes life
life becomes lie
lie down and die
die and become
become as you were before earth
earth before your birth
birth
earth

~Cie~

Note:
I was always one of those "I'll sleep when I'm dead" kinds of people. I worked long hours at physically taxing jobs. I worked long weeks filled with long hours. I was proud of being able to push myself well past the limits.
My diabetes got worse, I had a small stroke, and I had a severe injury to the median nerve in my left arm. My ability to work long hours at physically difficult jobs was gone forever. At the point when I had a small stroke, I was fired from my job as a home health nurse.
I live with fairly frequent suicide ideation, but the actual planning levels are pretty low as a rule. After I was fired, I started making plans to commit suicide because I felt like the world's worst fuck-up, like without my job I was nothing.
This is not going to be one of those "oh, but I'm so glad I didn't because I found God, got down to a single-digit pants size, somehow started looking half my age, married GQ Cover Model Guy, and now my life is a Hallmark Channel movie" stories.
Nah.
Still a crabby, fat, romanceless, agnostic, middle-aged, broke-ass curmudgeon. Still would be homeless if it wasn't for my son's kindness.
But I am glad I didn't commit suicide because if I had I wouldn't have been able to help my son get this house, and I wouldn't have found me.
Me is kind of an asshole, but we're on better terms these days now that I've had the time to get to know her a little.
Also, I have a feeling that sometimes those Hallmark Channel happy crappy stories about pretty people hooking up and living happily ever after might even make some people depressed. Like, you know, me. I think some people may need to know that an old crabby fat bitch learned that old, crabby, fat bitches have something to offer too without changing one fucking thing about themselves.

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 15: Mother May I Be a Mother (Choka)

when I was pregnant
it was a surprise to me
planned for adoption
told I could never give birth
it was not my wish
but it turned out for the best

~Cie~

Notes:
Because I had PCOS, I was told that I would never be able to have children.
I married young and had been married for 6 years. We used no form of birth control because we believed we couldn't have children. We planned to adopt.
While on vacation to Montana and Canada in 1989, I started feeling sick. This was shortly after the death of one of my childhood friends, who was working as a park ranger in Yellowstone. She slipped into a river and drowned. One of the places we went to see was the site where she died. I was having nightmares and wondered if my queasy feeling was due to the trauma of losing my old friend.
I felt sick for a month straight.
Figuring I was dying (and not entirely unhappy about that prospect because my life had never been particularly gleeful) I went to the doctor. She ran some tests.
I rather melodramatically asked her if I had a tumor.
She laughed and said "of a sort, I suppose. It will resolve on its own in approximately seven and a half months."
She gave me a referral to an OB/GYN.
For some reason when the nurse practitioner asked how I felt about being pregnant, it pissed me off. I didn't let on that the question made me angry, but I didn't like it. The answer, really, was surprised. I said I supposed I was okay with it. She asked me to elaborate, saying that I didn't sound convinced that I was okay. I said "well, I wasn't expecting it since I wasn't supposed to be able to have children. I'm fine with it."
I guess she wanted me to be jumping for joy and walking about with balloons and banners announcing my thrill over my unexpected miracle pregnancy. I was okay with being pregnant (other than the non-stop nausea) but the rest of my life was a mess. I had a plethora of untreated psychological problems and nowhere to turn, and I hated my job.
After my son was born, my marriage started to fall apart. My now ex-husband and I were polar opposites, and both of our families were invasive and emotionally unsupportive. He's an Aspie and I had undiagnosed bipolar disorder type 2, borderline personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. We were oil and water as temperaments went. As time went on, we became verbally abusive to each other and eventually started getting into fistfights. There was no saving the marriage.
We got divorced when our son was four. We started getting along better as platonic friends once we were no longer living together. Since that time we have on occasion had a roommate situation due to financial necessity, but I've always been glad enough for that to end. We're family now and I hope will be so till the end.

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 9: What My Eyes Saw

I Blinked and the World Was Gone
Photoshop Manipulation by The Real Cie

My eyes saw that in the end
Everything was just a lie
Seeing is not believing
Hearing is deceiving
Truth is but a silent sigh
Perspective nothing but perception
Reality is, on one hand, subjective
And on the other hand as objective
As a knife to the spine
My eyes are but windows
To the lies my soul tells

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 8: The Scent

he breathes the scent of me as he moves in
going for the kill, he can smell the sin
he thinks he knows I want what's on his mind
kills every little hope one at a time

he hates the wildness I hide inside
he thinks it's a game when I try to hide
he gets a thrill watching my dying dreams
he loves listening to my helpless screams

he wants me to be his porcelain doll
to be his servant at his beck and call
I'd sooner live my days in poverty
than ever grant him ownership of me

~Cie~

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 4: Gilded Cage

A cage
Whether silver, gold, or platinum
Or wrought iron
Is still a cage

Do not follow
The edicts of charismatic cons
Do not strive to become
What others have told you that you must be

Do not wait on a messiah
Who may be centuries away
Or a boogeyman conjured
To keep people compliant

Only you can set you free

Do not let what advertisers tell you
You must be in order to be "beautiful"
Keep you locked away
Closed off from the world

Don't let the quest for silver and gold
Trap you in a crate of greed
Until your need for wealth
Becomes more a coffin than a birdcage

Only you can set you free

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 3: Aunt Cie's Soapbox: Leave My Old Womb Alone (Choka)

lay off my old womb
I am not a candidate
for new motherhood
I can no longer achieve
reproduction, no
but it would not bring me joy
to endure the pain
of removing my old womb
it is my life choice
to keep my organs intact
despite a slightly
elevated chance that I
develop cancer
somewhere well on down the line
any womb is not
only worth saving when it
is available
to serve as incubator

~Cie~

Note:
The poem references the incidents of 2018 when my life continued revolving around my uterus despite the fact that the painful periods I had endured for 40 years had come to an end. In April of 2017, and again in April of 2018, I experienced post-menopausal bleeding, and in June of 2018, I underwent a D&C to determine the nature of the endometrial cells.
Had the cells been abnormal or the endometrial hyperplasia complex, this would have elevated my risk of future endometrial cancer by 36%, in which case I would have opted for a hysterectomy.
My cells were normal and it was simple hyperplasia. This only increases the risk of endometrial cancer by 1.6%. In the end, I felt that the risks posed by undergoing a hysterectomy, which is a major surgery no matter how casual a spin doctors try to put on it, were greater than opting for a wait and see approach.
Post-menopausal endometrial hyperplasia can occur for a variety of reasons. It is more common in Caucasian women, in women over fifty, in women with a larger body type, and in diabetic women. I am a large Caucasian woman over fifty with a large body type who has diabetes. As it turned out, I also had a number of small fibroids in my uterus which were probably irritating the endometrium and causing it to overgrow.
My primary care physician wanted me to have a hysterectomy.
My OB/GYN wanted me to have a hysterectomy.
The gynecologic oncologist whom I consulted wanted me to have a hysterectomy.
This despite the fact that all of them quoted a very low increased likelihood of the type of hyperplasia I was experiencing ever developing into cancer.
I had one of those obnoxious trans-vaginal ultrasounds in February of this year which showed that the endometrial lining was still slightly thicker than normal but had greatly reduced in size and was within the perimeters of acceptable. I did not experience bleeding in April of this year. My OB/GYN wanted to do another D&C, but I said no. There was no presenting reason to undergo a procedure that leaves me feeling like someone has been up in my business with a cheese grater.
I consulted with a radiologist who specializes in a procedure called uterine artery embolization, which utilizes tiny radioactive grains to block the uterine arteries and cut off the blood supply to the fibroids so they shrink and cease to cause trouble. As opposed to a hysterectomy, which is a major surgery, this is a minimally invasive approach. The doctor told me I was not a candidate for the procedure because fibroids will shrink on their own after menopause, but she agreed with me that since I had not experienced post-menopausal bleeding this year, the endometrial thickness is within acceptable boundaries, and my hyperplasia is the low-risk variety for future development of cancer, a wait and see approach makes sense in my case. She discussed this with my OB/GYN and the gynecologic oncologist, and they agreed with her.
During The Year Of Focusing Way Too Much On My Uterus, I learned just how quick doctors are to recommend a hysterectomy to post-menopausal women. If a woman can no longer serve as a baby factory, let's just yank the old plumbing out, risks be damned. The fact is, major surgery is always risky although sometimes the risks of surgery are necessary. It is also a fact that the female reproductive system provides benefits to its owner even after menopause and unless it is malfunctioning in a way that makes life unacceptably uncomfortable or poses risks to a woman's health, it's best to leave it alone.
Uterus: it's not just for incubating infants.
That's been Aunt Cie's Soapbox, Ladies! Hysterectomy is sometimes necessary, but it tends to be overprescribed, particularly in post-menopausal women.

OctPoWriMo 2019: Day 1: Dark Night of the Soul

Awakening from our dream of love, we see that once again
The dark night of the soul descends

Bleakness that no shiny happy folderol can end
Chaos reigns instead

Doubt descends to destroy
Every beautiful thing
Found in its path

Ghouls dig into the graves
History is unearthed

Incapable of believing
Jealousy
Kills
Love

Morning rushes away
Night descends

Old fears
Prey on us in the pitch black of our doubts

Regret overtakes
Soul fire ignites the last vestiges of hope

Tragically, certain ill-advised words cannot be
Unsaid

Vain tears cannot
Win back what was tossed aside

Xenos we are
You fly away

Zeroing the light in my heart
Back
to
Black

~Cie~

Couldn't leave without giving credit to the amazing Amy Winehouse for the inspiration.

NaPoWriMo 2019 Day 16 + Poems in April 2019 Day 16 & 5: Poetry As the Place Where the Spirit Within Hemorrhages Truth

Image by Enrique Meseguer from Pixabay

You return whenever I write poetry
Troublesome little ghost
Not sugar and spice and everything nice
You mournful, shadowed thing

Troublesome little ghost
Your nights filled with wanting and regret
You mournful, shadow thing
Needing to bleed out your words

Your nights filled with wanting and regret
I allow you to emerge from my cold shell
Needing to bleed out your words
"The poem is the way," I say

I allow you to emerge from my cold shell
Offering truth a way to be set free
"The poem is the way," I say
You need not put on false airs with poetry

Offering truth a way to be set free
Poetry, I think, is ultimate honesty
You need not put on false airs with poetry
Or so it is that I have always believed

Poetry, I think, is ultimate honestly
You need not pretend to be aught but what you are
Or so it is that I have always believed
But there are those who disagree on poetry

You need not pretend to be aught but what you are
You need not present as light when you are shadow
But there are those who disagree on poetry
Poetry, they say, is the domain of sugar and spice

You need not present as light when you are shadow
Sad little ghost, pay no mind to the Poetry Police
Poetry, they say, is the domain of sugar and spice
Bleed your truth as freely as you need

Sad little ghost, pay no mind to the Poetry Police
You mournful, shadowed thing
Poetry, they say, is the domain of sugar and spice
You return whenever I write poetry

~Cie~

Notes:
The poetic form is Pantoum. Fortunately, a Pantoum need not rhyme.
The Poems in April prompt #16 was to create a poem with a title starting with "Poetry As..."
The Poems in April prompt #5 was to describe a supernatural creature who is a troublesome housemate. I can think of no more troublesome a housemate than the child I once was who each day laments that the big dreams she had for her life slip further and further away from her grasp, fading into the impossible.
I think the NaPoWriMo prompt ended up eating the dust of the other two prompts.
A couple of years ago when I was doing OctPoWriMo, I almost ended up ceasing participation in poetry blog hops for good when I allowed the troubled spirit who will always be a part of me to express itself and was admonished that my poetry was "catharsis" and I would one day become "a beacon of light in the world" or some such thing.
To me, these well-meaning but inaccurate statements showed two things.
First, that people who are not happy by nature are unacceptable as they are and must become, or at least pretend to be, the sort of person who is "a light in the world."
Second, that dark poetry (and depressive people) are not as valid or worthwhile as happy, well-adjusted people writing poems about the joys of life and how grateful they are to live under the rule of a benevolent deity in a happy and joyful world where there are no Debbie Downers or Negative Neds messing things up with their dark ickiness.
To me, poetry must remain the domain where you can TELL IT LIKE IT IS, not like other people think it's supposed to be.
Poetry must remain the place where one can hemorrhage one's soul all over the damn place and not have people constantly trying to slap smiley bandages on their spiritual wounds.
Poetry must be allowed to be dark and filled with pain.
During the final years of my nursing career, a statement had been popularized that "PAIN IS WHATEVER THE PATIENT SAYS IT IS."
I greatly advocate for this belief. It is so much more helpful than awful epithets such as "drug-seeking behavior," which had previously been the dismissive go-to whenever a patient requested pain medication earlier than it was scheduled.
People who experience high levels of chronic pain do not respond to pain medications the way people who do not experience chronic pain (or who experience chronic pain of lesser degrees) respond to pain medication. A person with high levels of chronic pain could ingest enough pain medication to knock out a large horse and be perfectly coherent, and I'm only being slightly hyperbolic.
FYI, low-grade chronic pain (such as I have) isn't a walk in the park either. I'm tired all the time and have a tendency to experience brain fog and disturbed sleep. My pain levels aren't such that I require narcotics, but NSAIDS don't really help.
I experienced intense chronic pain for about six weeks when I initially injured the median nerve in my left arm. I couldn't sit up for more than about 45 minutes before I had to lie on the arm to try and numb it. Intense chronic pain is no joke, and anyone who says things like "people need to just push through the pain" or fail to understand why people become so desperate for relief that they obtain medications through illegal channels because the medications they've been prescribed legally aren't cutting the mustard need to get off their high horse.
At this point, my left arm constantly tingles. I've gotten enough sensation back in my left hand that it no longer feels like a lump of clay, but I was damn grateful for "lump of clay" as opposed to constant searing pain up and down the arm. Physical therapy saved my life, literally. I would need more P.T. to get rid of the constant numbness and tingling, but Medicaid will only pay for 12 sessions per injury. Better than nothing, but ridiculous to put a limitation on the sort of thing which doesn't tend to behave in a predictable fashion.
In any case, just as pain is whatever the patient says it is, POETRY IS WHATEVER THE POET SAYS IT IS.
My poetry need not be "catharsis." It need not lead to me becoming "a beacon of light in the world" to be absolutely 100% valid. The wounded inner self is allowed to express its truth without expectation of transformation.
People with depressive personalities are valid as they are. They need not be drugged into compliance. For some of us, the drugs don't work anyway, or they make things worse. Drugs are not the answer to everything.
I don't need to be like you.
I am valid just as I am.
Apologies for jumping on ye olde soapbox, but some things cannot be said enough.
