As a nearly 60-year-old adult, I am aware that bullies are often that way because they are unhappy with themselves and may be victims of abuse. My younger self still has trouble feeling sympathy, given the hell my bullies made my life through school.

Beautifully written. I admit to being a bit of a cynic as far as my own past crushes and think my response would be "why in the world was I so hung up on that dork?" I don't have a lot of fond memories of my teen years, although sometimes I miss having a liver that allowed me to drink enough to float a battleship.

Honestly, I can see where this scenario could happen. If anyone was to mess with me like that, I'd have grabbed something to defend myself with too. I was bullied all through school and I've also been sexually assaulted. People need to be careful about the "jokes" they play.

In some ways, this story reminds me of an episode from an old Vampirella comic. The girl's father was a devil worshiper, and one night she saw him being absorbed by a light entity. Years later, she married a charming fellow who turned out to be a demon. That story scared the hell out of me! 

This story made me think of the girl I used to be and how desperate I was for male attention. I did some really stupid things in pursuit of such.

I really enjoyed the snippet. I worked with the elderly for a significant percentage of my working life, about 25 years. I sometimes wonder if it isn't harder to be a person whose mind is still all there but whose body is betraying them.

Taking it slow after a heart attack is the right thing to do. 

I'm still working on editing The Wizard's Key. Which I totally didn't finish two years ago. Nope, I just finished it yesterday! I promise. ;-)

I live with a variety of parasomnias including night terrors, nightmares, and my very favorite, sleep paralysis. This snippet had the feel of one of my nightmares about being dragged out of my body.

I worked as a nurse's aide for a cumulative of 25 years. I was certified as an EMT and I worked as an LPN between 2015 and 2018 before my own health problems made it so I couldn't do that kind of work anymore. I've cleaned up more poop than most people could imagine. One time a patient's colostomy bag exploded. Reading about bodily functions wouldn't make me bat an eye.

As a collective, humans are pretty much irredeemable. We are the most destructive species and the only species that displays deliberate cruelty and sadism for entertainment. Therefore we have to consider each individual person because there are those of us who try to be something better. Sometimes it's hard to keep going knowing the awful things people do to each other and the world.

Good work incorporating a real situation into the work of fiction. I don't have any school-age kids in my life, so I wasn't aware of the teacher shortage. The cost of living is so high and teacher salaries are, well, not.

The truth is, I wanted to be a professional musician, but as my father informed the psychologist when we went to family counseling, I was the "least musically talented" person in the family. He wanted me to stop pursuing music, and he got his wish. I never played an instrument again after that day, which was some 32 years ago.

I found out the hard way that was what the guy I spent my senior year madly enamored with wanted from me. I thought I'd gotten lucky, and he was seeing the light. He was just seeing an easy mark. 

I would have thought that twenty-two years into the twenty-first century, boys might have learned to see girls as human beings. If anything, I think things have gotten worse with kids watching porn from a young age and hookup culture.

Abusers like this are all the same. They didn't mean it. They were tired, stressed, it just happened, you made them do it. 

My aunt (RIP) was married to a horribly abusive man for 25 years. My mother has speculated that chronic head injuries may have been responsible for the dementia she developed later in life.

This is a beautifully written story that makes the reader think about the injustices that continue to be faced by American Indians. 

I never worried that my child would be taken from me at birth. I was 25 years old and married. I had a friend in high school who was pushed into giving her baby up for adoption. She fell into a deep depression after that and disappeared. Nearly 40 years later, I still think about her often and wonder what happened to her.

I don't think I'd be thrilled about being in this situation either. It might be even worse than going to the dentist. A little anyway. I'm very dental-phobic. I always have to get nitrous oxide. I hate the way it makes me feel, but it alters my sense of time.

I've sought friends who would be interested in me as well as themselves for my entire life. Any time I think I've found them, they either disappear or betray me. That's the problem with being broken. Only other broken people will have anything to do with you.

Neither of these characters seems especially broken, at least not on the surface. I find myself relating to them anyway.

There's a movie/story called "More Beautiful for Having Been Broken." I've always thought what a load of nonsense that idea is.

Tending to a president's funeral would certainly be an honor for a mortuary. 

My great-uncle was a mortician. He definitely didn't fit the stereotype of the cadaverous (pun not intended) fellow in a dark suit with slick black hair. He was a gregarious, slightly round fellow who wanted to help people through the most difficult time in their lives. He was just 64 years old when he died from prostate cancer. He had a house by a lake and it was pleasant to watch the sunset there.

A compelling scenario. I have always found that the kind of men who harass women aren't particularly choosy about looks. I've never been any raving beauty, but have endured my fair share of harassment. Now that I'm over 50 (closing in on 60) and therefore invisible, such harassment is, fortunately, rare, but it still happens on occasion. Excellent writing. There are no words I can say to do it justice.

I sometimes despair that I have to live on a disability allotment of $1240 and get most of my provisions from the food bank. There is very little left after the bills are paid. My son often reminds me that even though our situation is difficult, we are in a better position than many people, even in the United States.

(My son is high-functioning autistic and not able to hold a normal job. He isn't on disability because one of us has to be able to amass savings in case of an emergency. I cannot have more than $2000 in savings.)

I'm glad the protagonist gets a happy ending to his story. I honestly feel like this when publishing comments, which is why sometimes it takes me a long time to get around to it.
